Cationics
It is well known that cationic curing brings substantial benefits to the coating and ink industries, particularly to metal and plastic substrates. Cationic curing involves a ring opening polymerisation of epoxy resins. These resins bring different properties to those of acrylates and can add the advantage of excellent adhesion and good chemical resistance to applications such as metal decorating and inks. Cationic curing does not suffer from oxygen inhibition and the problems of surface cure and gives very low shrinkage. Sulphonium or iodonium salt photoinitators are used with UV light to generate to protonic acid that initiates the ring opening mechanism.
Thioxanthone sensitisers can be used to increase the reactivity for pigmented systems. The epoxy resins can be modified by the use of oxetanes, vinyl ethers or polyols to provide the required rheology for the application.
